WELCOME TO OUR

Journal

In a social-media-run-world we LOVE blogging because it gives us a space to share more of our work that just "the highlight reel". Honestly, anyone can take 3 great photos from a wedding to share on Instagram. We love sharing an ENTIRE wedding day so that you can see how consistently beautiful our work is. Plus, it's a fun way for our clients to share their wedding images with friends and family online. We hope you enjoy!

The Hero

This week’s Little Love Story was supposed to be about our first Christmas as boyfriend and girlfriend, but something happened last night that I can’t just ignore. It’s perfectly hilarious Little Love Story material.

As per the usual in the Shillito family, after the grandbabies went to sleep, we all sat down to play guitar and sing. We mostly sing worship songs but at one point, while some people were choosing a new song, my older brother Matt began to play a familiar tune. Before I realized what it was, Jacob and my sister Rachel were already laughing. Matt and Jacob started to sing:

“Would you dance, if I asked you to dance? Would you run, and never look back?”

It took me back to a few months after we started dating, to a day I popped a mixed CD I made for Jacob into his car CD player and the first song that came on was this same one. I sang loudly:

“Would you cry, if you saw me crying? And would you save my soul, tonight?”

Jacob didn’t join in but I continued:

“I can be your hero, BABAY! I can kiss away the pain!”

Jacob turned it down.

“I’m sorry. I can’t do it,” he said, looking uncomfortable.

I was confused.

“I used to turn this song on every time I would drive your sister somewhere in high school.”

We sat in silence for a moment.

And then I lost it. I laughed uncontrollably for a minimum of 4 minutes. When I could finally speak I said, “I cannot wait to ask her about this!” I texted her and said, “Does the song ‘Hero’ mean anything to you?”

She responded quickly, “Oh gosh.”

If you don’t remember, I wrote a past Little Love Story about how Jacob had a fatty crush on my sister in high school. They were good friends and that’s where it ended for her. But for him, he used every opportunity he could to take her places, church, hang outs, anything. Each time she would get into his car, he would make sure to turn on that one song that he was certain would win her over. Unfortunately for Jacob, my sister attributed this habitual song playing to an odd regard for Enrique Iglesias’s musical talent rather than the profession of love he intended.

“Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind? I don’t care you’re here, tonight.”

Since then, I have taken any and all opportunities to bring this song up. It’s too good not to.

Last night, as Matt + Jacob finished up the final chorus, I couldn’t help but laugh, and be thankful that my relationship with Jacob has become deeper as he has actually become a part of my family. He can joke with my dad, cook with my mom, play guitar with my brothers, and laugh with my sisters (especially when this song comes on the ipod).

I could end this Little Love Story by saying that I am so glad I found “My Hero” but that would be way too cheesy, so I’ll just leave you with some beautiful lyrics from Enrique himself.

“And I will stand by you, forever. You can take my breath away. You can take my breath away. An’ I can be your hero.”
